Thinking of fitting Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tyres to a Java Neo ECO? The tyre itself can fit the 20-inch platform, but changing the tyres alone does not automatically mean the bicycle will continue to fold and roll correctly.
During our Java Neo ECO Billy Bonkers setup at The Bike Atrium in Singapore, we identified three clearance problems that become apparent when the trifold is folded. They involve the original hook position, the folded front tyre and skewer cap, and the clearance between the wider tyre and the main frame.
This guide explains those problems first, then shows the combination of parts we used to correct them. For broader compatibility across other Java Neo versions, refer to our complete Java Neo Billy Bonkers Setup Guide .
Can Billy Bonkers tyres be fitted to a Java Neo ECO? Yes, this guide documents our tested 20-inch Java Neo ECO with Billy Bonkers 20 × 2.0 tyres. However, the wider tyres change the clearances when the bicycle is folded. On the setup shown here, additional parts were needed so the bike could fold and roll properly rather than simply fitting the tyres and leaving the original folding hardware unchanged.

The video below demonstrates the actual Java Neo ECO used for this guide. It shows the clearance problems during folding, the parts installed to address them, and the final folded setup after the changes were completed.

Why Does a Billy Bonkers Upgrade Affect Folding?
A trifold bicycle has much tighter folded clearances than a conventional bicycle. When the Java Neo ECO folds, the wheels, frame, hook and rolling hardware occupy specific positions relative to one another.
Moving to a wider tyre such as the 20 × 2.0 Billy Bonkers changes those relationships. A clearance that works with the original tyre may become too small once the wider tyre is installed.
That is why a Billy Bonkers conversion should be considered as a complete folded-bike setup, rather than only a tyre replacement. The same principle applies when combining wider tyres with an easywheel extender, rack, suspension or different easywheels.
If you are planning upgrades beyond the tyres, our Complete Java Neo Upgrade Guide explains why tyre width, rack, extender, easywheels and other components should be planned as one system.
Issue 1: The Folding Hook Rubs Against the Billy Bonkers Tyre

Stock hook position meets the wider tyre
The first problem appears when the Java Neo ECO is folded. With the wider Billy Bonkers tyre installed, the original hook area can sit against the tyre.
Instead of the folding system settling naturally into position, the tyre and hook compete for the same limited space. This introduces resistance while folding and prevents the folded arrangement from sitting as cleanly as intended.
Simply forcing the hook farther in is not the ideal answer, because changing the wheel position can create another clearance problem elsewhere on the folded bike.
Issue 2: The Folded Front Tyre Rubs the Skewer Cap

The front wheel can no longer spin freely when folded
The second issue becomes important when you want to roll the Java Neo ECO while it is folded.
In the setup shown above, the wider folded front tyre comes into contact with the nearby skewer cap. Once there is contact, the front wheel can no longer rotate freely. That creates unnecessary rolling resistance.
In other words, a tyre may appear to fit the wheel perfectly while the bicycle is unfolded, but still cause a problem once all three sections of the trifold occupy their folded positions.
For a deeper explanation of how wheel position, easywheels and extenders interact, see our Java Neo Folding & Rolling Guide .
Issue 3: The Billy Bonkers Tyre Sits Too Close to the Main Frame

Moving the hook alone does not solve every clearance point
Even when the hook is positioned more closely against the bicycle, the wider Billy Bonkers tyre can still end up sitting extremely close to the main frame.
This demonstrates why the problem cannot be treated as only a hook issue. The position of the folded wheel itself needs to be corrected so there is sufficient clearance between the tyre, hook, frame and rolling hardware.
The required geometry depends on the complete setup, which is why the current Java Neo 3-in-1 Integrated Hook Adapter is offered in configuration-specific variants rather than as one universal fitting.
How We Corrected the Java Neo ECO Billy Bonkers Fitment
Once the interference points are understood, the solution becomes much clearer. Instead of forcing the existing components to work around a wider tyre, we change the relevant folded geometry and rolling support so the components have the clearance they need.
Replaces the original hook and corrects the folded wheel position for the selected configuration. The current product is available in dedicated 20-inch Billy Bonkers variants. View the Java Neo hook adapter .
Provides a more practical rolling support arrangement and allows the easywheels to support the folded bike more effectively. View the Java Neo Easywheel Extender .
On the ECO setup shown in our video, the easywheels were changed to a thinner type so the wider tyre had sufficient clearance around the rolling assembly.
A small spacer was also added on the tested setup to provide additional lateral clearance and prevent the easywheel arrangement from sitting unnecessarily close to the tyre.
The Result: A Java Neo ECO That Can Fold and Roll Properly
After the clearance points were addressed, we checked the bicycle again in both its normal riding position and its fully folded position.
The important point is not simply that the Billy Bonkers tyres can be mounted onto the wheels. A successful trifold setup also needs to maintain suitable clearance and usable rolling behaviour after the bicycle is folded.

Before Installing Billy Bonkers on Your Java Neo ECO
This guide documents the 20-inch ECO configuration shown in our workshop test.
The documented Billy Bonkers setup in this guide uses 20 × 2.0 tyres.
Look at the hook, main frame, folded front tyre, skewer area and easywheel assembly.
Select the adapter configuration according to the bicycle as it will actually be used.
The bike should fold naturally and the intended rolling wheels should rotate without unwanted tyre contact.
Java Neo ECO Billy Bonkers Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Java Neo ECO use Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tyres?
Yes. This guide documents a Java Neo ECO 20-inch setup using Billy Bonkers 20 × 2.0 tyres. The tyre conversion should still be treated as a complete folding and rolling setup because the wider tyres alter folded clearances.
Can I just install Billy Bonkers tyres without changing anything else?
Not necessarily. On the ECO configuration shown here, fitting the tyres alone created contact at the hook, skewer-cap area and main-frame clearance point. The complete folded setup needs to be checked after installation.
Why does the front wheel not spin freely after folding?
In the setup demonstrated in our video, the wider folded front tyre contacts the nearby skewer cap. The contact creates resistance and prevents the wheel from spinning freely while the bicycle is being rolled.
What parts were used to solve the Java Neo ECO Billy Bonkers fitment issues?
The tested setup uses a Java Neo 3-in-1 Integrated Hook Adapter, a custom Easywheel Extender, thinner easywheels and an additional spacer for clearance.
Does the 3-in-1 hook adapter require drilling the Java Neo frame?
No permanent drilling is stated for the current adapter. It replaces the original hook and uses the appropriate mounting position and hardware for the selected setup.
Does this guide apply to a 16-inch Java Neo?
No. This article specifically documents the 20-inch Java Neo ECO with 20 × 2.0 Billy Bonkers tyres. Refer to the broader Java Neo Billy Bonkers compatibility guide before assuming the same configuration applies to another wheel size.
Where can I have a Java Neo ECO Billy Bonkers setup checked in Singapore?
The Bike Atrium can assess Java Neo folding, tyre and upgrade compatibility at our bicycle showroom and workshop at 11 Woodlands Close #04-45, Singapore 737853. Bringing the complete bike allows the folded clearances to be checked as one system.
